More About Claire O'Brien

As the daughter of two retired teachers I have always rebelled against following their footsteps into teaching. However, having Guest Lectured to undergraduate students (2011-2015), delivered training for prospective adopters (2017-2018), and bereavement therapist colleagues (2018-2020), doing ongoing training to become a Clinical Supervisor (2019-2020), and most recently trained as a Certified SandStory Therapy® Trainer (2020) I have to admit...I love to teach!!

I also love to learn and have sat on the other side as the eager trainee, at many different professional development events and reflective practice groups but one particular training really stood out - SandStory Therapy®.

Having originally used sand and symbols therapeutically with children in a Women's Refuge I developed a much deeper understanding (and respect!) for the therapeutic powers of Sandplay during my Play Therapy training. Having explored my own therapeutic process in sand during my experiential training and witnessed the depth and power of client processes in sand I knew one day I wanted to go further still with using sand and symbols in therapy....and in 2018 along came the first ever SandStory Therapy® training.

I am very proud to have been the first Registered SandStory Therapist to complete my training and I am absolutely delighted to have had the opportunity to train as a Certified SandStory Therapy® Trainer under Lara Kasza - the queen of SandStory!

If you are interested to know more about my journey please continue reading...

I have always had a passion for working with children and families. Prior to becoming a therapist I completed a degree in Early Childhood Studies and specialised at postgraduate level in Developmental and Therapeutic Play. I worked in a variety of settings from nurseries and schools, to domestic abuse services and Children's Centres, but knew I wanted more specialist skills to support the most vulnerable children.

Play Therapy training is unlike any other I had experienced before...very much hands on and experiential, a roller-coaster of emotions, but a real journey of transformation both professionally and personally...and the learning very much continues!

As a Play and Creative Arts Therapist I have worked in mainstream and Special Educational Needs schools, and Pupil Referral Units and I was lucky enough to be invited back to Edge Hill University, where I did my undergraduate degree, to Guest Lecture between 2011-2015 to share my passion for therapeutic play and play therapy.

In 2017 I relocated from Merseyside in the North West of England, to Dorset in the South West. I spent the first year gaining valuable experience working for a charitable adoption agency offering family support and delivering training to prospective adopters.

I am now very happily settled in Dorset, and when I am not working or studying you'll find me strolling (and probably paddling!) on one of the many beautiful beaches along the Jurassic coast, or singing with the Funky Choir!

I have a thriving business offering Play and Creative Arts Therapies in private practice and specialise in working for a child bereavement charity and the regional adoption agency.

I am currently a Trainee Clinical Supervisor and I am enjoying the opportunity to work with some wonderful trainee and qualified play therapists, as well as school staff who support vulnerable children day to day.

And now as a Certified SandStory Therapy® Trainer I am excited to share my love of sand and symbols with more therapists...and possibly some other aspects of Play and Creative Arts Therapies in the future...watch this space!😊
