BGCSE Biology

Course begins: January 2nd

The Bahamas General Certificate of Secondary Education is an examination that was established in 1992 having been developed in consultation with the University of Cambridge Local Examination Syndicate (UCLES).

This examination is designed to assess the achievement of at least 80-85% of the Bahamian Students on completion of five or six years of secondary level education. It will provide a broadening of opportunity for students to show what they know, understand and can do.

This preparation course is designed for candidates taking Biology as a single subject. You will review three years of content. The course is delivered online and includes a print workbook. The course is also assisted by an Instructor.

This course prepares students to sit the BGCSE examination and is divided into five sections:

  1. Environmental Biology
  2. Cell Biology & Genetics
  3. Nutrition & Food Supply
  4. Plant Anatomy
  5. Human Anatomy

Upon completion of this course candidates will be able to:

  1. show knowledge and understanding of scientific language, facts, and instruments
  2. apply learned facts and observations in terms of theories and models
  3. demonstrate knowledge of methods of measurement and their appropriate units
  4. translate information from one form to another
  5. communicate observations logically and concisely
  6. select appropriate facts to illustrate given principles and concepts
  7. follow and carry out practical instructions accurately and safely

Exam Scheme

This exam is made up of three written papers and a practical assessment.

PAPER 1 (Core) 1.25 hours. Consists of 50 multiple choice questions.(30%)

PAPER 2 (Core) 1.30 hours.  Consists of short answer and structured questions. (50%)  Papers 1 and 2 together with the practical are intended for candidates of middle or lower ability levels. The highest achievable grade is a C.

PAPER 4 Practical Assessment (20%)


PAPER 3 (Extended) 1.30 hours.  Consists of structured and free response questions in two sections A and B.  Recommended for candidates likely to score a grade of A-B. (80%)
