Whimsical Woodland Animals in Watercolor

Nature is such a big inspiration for me, and animals are a big part of what I love about the outdoor world.

Join me in learning how to create whimsical woodland animals in watercolor. In this course, we will be drawing, sketching and painting three different animals - cardinal, fox and bear. I'll show you all my tips on giving them whimsical character, yet keeping realistic features.

We will:

  • Learn how to use reference photos to create drawings and sketches
  • How to transfer sketches to watercolor paper using two different methods.
  • Learn all sorts of tips and techniques on painting with watercolor, including wet on wet, wet on dry, blending, fading and all things in between!
  • I will walk you through each painting project, step by step. We'll break each part down so that you can really learn and transfer what you've learned to creating your own whimsical creatures.

There's plenty of inspiration in this course to keep you creating!

While this class is meant for any level, my suggestion is that you've worked with watercolor before. If you've taken one of my other online courses or have explored watercolor in other ways, you'll be all set!

If you are worried about the drawing part - don't worry! I am providing my sketches for you to download. You can use them just in case you don't feel confident in your drawings yet. (But, I promise, the drawing part isn't scary!)

I'd also love to recommend my other watercolor course 'Wonderland Watercolor' where I teach whimsical landscape techniques in depth. I am offering these two classes together as a bundled deal, so I hope you'll check it out! More information can be found here.

If you've never used watercolor, I suggest starting with one of my beginner courses, 'Cosmic Watercolor' or 'Enchanted Feathers'. Both can be found on my website www.MelanieAprilArt.com

Below you'll find the three main projects we'll work on in class...

I'm also including short tutorials on different methods of painting and creating these little cuties...

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is this class for?

Anyone! But, I do recommend that you've used watercolor before. If you've taken one of my other courses, you're all set! I will be focusing on painting the animals, not as much on backgrounds and surroundings. If you'd like more instruction on how I create landscapes, please check out my course 'Wonderland Watercolor'. If you are completely new to watercolor, please check out my classes 'Cosmic Watercolor' or 'Enchanted Feathers'. You can find them on my website at www.MelanieAprilArt.com

What supplies will I need?

I always say use what you have - the one thing I urge in this class is to use artist grade 140lb cold press watercolor paper. Anything less can leave you frustrated with these techniques. I will detail the specific colors I use for each project, but you don't have to use the exact colors I use. A basic color palette will suffice. You can use whatever paint brushes you are comfortable with - I use synthetic rounds, sizes 0-8. You will most definitely need a small brush for detail work (size 0 works great!). For sketching and drawing - you'll need just paper and pencil. We will be using tracing paper to transfer our drawings from plain paper to watercolor paper.

How long do I have access to the course?

Forever! Once you've enrolled and paid, you'll have access to the course material for as long as you need. So devour it all in one weekend or take things slow. It's your choice!

What if I'm unhappy with my purchase?

Well, I would be sad. Due to the instant access of content, I do not offer refunds - however, if you are unsatisfied with the course, please contact me and I'll make it right!

I still have a question, how can I contact you?

I'd be happy to answer any questions you might have. Send me an email at melanie.srq@gmail.com.
