Introduction

Accounting provides the most important information for any business organization. It provides the state of the business in numbers, not in words. It is the most important part of any successful business.

All professionals, students, managers, business owners or anyone who aspires to become an entrepreneur or anyone who is managing any aspect of a business organization need to understand what accounting is. You need to understand, at the very least, the basic principles of accounting.

This course is going to help you understand the basic principles of accounting so that you can read and understand the three main financial reports of a company: the balance sheet, the income statement, and the cash flow statement. You will be able to understand the basic accounting equation and how to factor in debits, credits, inventory, and taxes, which will help you to make the right decisions to increase your company's wealth and profit.

We are aware that you do not know anything about accounting or any accounting terms so we will learn accounting step-by-step. We will explain all accounting concepts in a very easy way, using real-life examples wherever possible. We have designed the course so that you need to understand all concepts in any given lesson before you can successfully complete the lesson and move on. You need to master each previous lesson fully in order to understand the concepts covered in the next lessons.

Learning accounting is like any other new skill. The skill needs to be practiced in order for it to be effective. You have to do it to learn it. If you are a student, you need to solve the accounting problems or exercises by yourself, applying the principles that you have learned. If you are employed and have access to your company's financial statements, take the time to apply the examples to your company's financials. If you are an entrepreneur, a business owner, or plan to start your own business, try to apply what you have learned from this course using your own business relevant assets.

Anyone can learn the basic principles of accounting. The same fundamental principles apply regardless of whether it is a large corporation or a small business enterprise. Understanding the basics of accounting can make the difference between success and failure in so many different areas of life.

Accounting is the language of business. We have to speak it, read it or understand it.

This course will lay the basic groundwork of bookkeeping and accounting. It is broken down into 8 lesson groups, all of which work together to achieve the following objectives. You will be able to:

  • gain a fundamental understanding of accounting concepts;
  • read and extract useful, practical information contained in financial statements;
  • improve your personal financial situation or improve your business' or company's bottom line;
  • gain a solid understanding of the role of accounting in today's economy and business world; and most of all
  • become not just a competent bookkeeper but a successful entrepreneur.
