A swan and reflections on water

Enjoy painting this graceful swan gliding along the river and capture the light on the swan and the reflections in the water. The subject is quite simple but several techniques are used to depict the soft and hard edged reflections in the water and to retain the white of the paper for the highlights on the swan.

In this video I will show you how to:

  • Transfer the image using trace down paper
  • Use masking fluid
  • Mix the all the colours you need from a palette of just three colours
  • Paint using wet into wet and wet on dry

I have included a photo of the swan in colour and a second in black and white, so you can look at the different tones in the picture. I've also included an outline sketch, which you can use with trace down paper to transfer the image onto stretched watercolour paper, or use a Lightbox to transfer the image to your watercolour paper.

Incase you would like to try a second alternative painting of the swan I have included a second downloadable image.
