My name is Diana Hand. I am an artist and a passionate horse lover. If you also love horses and long to draw them, then this is the course for you.
Horses are my source of inspiration and I aim to express both their inner essence and my own response to their energy and beauty. I like to draw very spontaneously and freely, and I can show you too how to access your own inner artist to make individual and contemporary art.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
In this course I will introduce you to simple techniques which will provide you with the basics so that you can then create your own drawings from your memories and images or from observation, or from a combination of all three.
I will show you how to create a portfolio and to work towards a final project using the techniques and ideas in the course.
Knowledge and creativity
We will learn how to use charcoal in a free and natural way, and then how to combine this way of drawing with a basic knowledge of anatomy to make your personal portfolio of expressive equestrian images.
MARK MAKING WITH CHARCOAL
This is a fun part where you get to play with the wonderful medium of charcoal to make textures, lines and abstract shapes
THE PROPORTIONS OF THE HORSE
This key module will give you the tools to to combine your expressive drawing with knowledge of the horse's shapes and proportions.
I have a great collection of photographs and other images to inspire me!
Collect them and keep handy for inspiration and reference.
MARK MAKING AND PROPORTION
Try a series of drawings combining the principles of proportion with mark making techniques.
Drawing from memory
TEST YOUR KNOWLEDGE
We will experiment with drawing from memory to test our knowledge and to fully access our creativity.
Horse art in history
HORSE ARTISTS FROM HISTORY
I will show you the many different ways of depicting the
horse from cave art to 21st century so that you are inspired to try new ideas or have confidence in your own vision.
Creating your "theme"
BRING IT ALL TOGETHER
Finally we will reflect on the course, what you have learnt and enjoyed most, and we will plan a complete project or series, with your own "theme" as the key focus.
This is something I am incredibly keen on. I am a very intuitive and expressive maker and artist and I love that directness. And when it works, boy, does it work! But making art is a skill and that means awareness and control as well. Without for a minute losing the energy that is the heart of the drawing, you can harness that energy in whatever way you wish.
HAVING A FOCUS
Having a focus and a plan is THE way to do that. Whether you want to tell a story, make a beautiful composition or pattern, or maybe a super-realistic equestrian drawing, it is so helpful to have a plan. Paradoxically that may take you to places you never

WHAT YOU WILL NEED
NO PRIOR EXPERIENCE NEEDED
You do not need to have any prior experience of art, and the most important thing is to have a passion for drawing the horse, or even just a love of drawing. That passion will guide you towards your own way of making art. If you are already an experienced artist, you will gain new insights from the course.
For this course you will require inexpensive and readily available drawing materials such as willow charcoal, an eraser, and a sketchpad. Detailed information on materials is given in Lesson 1.
HOW MUCH TIME?
There are 9 modules. Each module can be completed in a minimum of about two hours, or more if you have the time. I would recommend taking time to allow your work to develop and to work at your own pace. If you would like to submit your drawings to the group facebook page (optional) then that choice is available to you. I do hope that you will join me on this journey!

"A very good course - it has made think a lot and I have been inspired to create a large mural, starting with stencils of four horses and taking it from there, using chalk paint and acrylic paint (note from Diana - this is a beautiful work) Thank you.- S.C Scotland
“The course is so enjoyable with no pressure on time or results. Diana is professional and her enthusiasm and passion for what she does is infectious. With practice, anyone can learn to draw horses with her help and guidance.” This course has helped me so much, so thank you, Diana." - A.D. U.K.
"I have just been taking part in Diana’s course The Art of Drawing Horses and have found it totally inspirational and thoroughly enjoyable. It has really helped me overcome my fear of drawing anything let alone horses!
The course was practical and well set out. The rules of proportion and shape really helped lay the groundwork to understand the structure and movement of the horse. But Diana then encouraged you to be creative and free up your way of working without getting too worried about detail. The Cave to Contemporary lesson and Diana’s inclusion of different artist’s interpretation of the horse really helped me understand that how you choose to depict the horse is as much about an emotional and spiritual connection as a perfect ability to draw realistically. This gave me confidence to experiment and free up my drawing.
Above all I was so impressed with Diana’s feedback and response to any work I sent her. She spent a lot of time and effort analysing my drawings and giving constructive and encouraging advice, something I was not expecting on an on line course. So a big thank-you to Diana for all her help and hard work and for conveying to us her love and passion for the art of drawing the horse." - J.J., France
"I have enjoyed the course very much indeed, and hope I can find some actual horses to paint. I was surprised by how easy it was to follow these lessons. I especially liked the demonstration videos, it is always better to see the actual drawing done.. Once this current situation is over I will be paying a visit to our many Art Galleries to see the horses." - M.S., Scotland
"I felt uninhibited about the drawing for the first time ever" - K. Scotland
"Diana has so much knowledge and a clear passion for horses" - F. Scotland
"Diana builds a confidence in experimenting with the materials and equine form" - G. Scotland
