Free Machining Fun - Thread painting

Hello and welcome to my course, Free Machining Fun - Thread Painting.

I am Gina Ferrari, an adult education tutor with over twenty years experience teaching machine embroidery. In this course I will teach you everything you need to know to continue your journey in machine embroidery and then give you a couple of quick, fun and achievable projects to give you plenty of practice.

As well as your sewing machine, with an ability to lower the feed dogs, you will just need some basic supplies and equipment. The course is organised into short sections or lessons and within each there are several videos and downloadable PDFs to guide you through each step. These are projects and skills that I would normally teach over a period of about 10 -12 hours or over the course of a couple of days, but you will be able to take this at your own pace, watching the videos and doing the exercises in a way that suits you. And of course you can repeat the projects as often as you like! It is not necessary to have previous experience of machine embroidery, as the first section will guide you through everything you need to know to get started, although if you took the first course in the series you can skip this part. The course is designed for the complete beginner or for those with limited experience. However, the projects are fun for any level of embroiderer.

If you have any questions that I have not answered here then please do get in touch. Enrolment is now open and this will give you immediate full access to all the course content.

Create small patches that can be used to decorate the front of cards, made into brooches or even framed as mini pictures

Create a piece of hoop art... maybe try a portrait of your favourite rock star?

Or use the patches to decorate your clothes

The hoops also work well for flowers or birds. These were all made by students in one of my classes.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do I have access to the course?

Forever! Once you've enrolled and paid, you'll have access to the course material for as long as you need. So devour it all in one weekend or take things slowly. Go through and do it all again. It's your choice!

What materials will I need

Number one is a sewing machine where you can lower or cover the feed dogs plus an embroidery foot. You will need some coloured threads, some slightly thicker hand embroidery threads, some white felt and Lutradur. Everything else I use is optional.

How long will the course take?

This really is entirely up to you. When I teach this content in person it probably takes about 6-8 hours but the more time you spend and the more you can practise the techniques the more proficient you will become. And of course as it is online you can progress at your own pace.

What are your qualifications

I originally trained as a secondary school teacher and taught Maths and Art in a North London school before taking a career break to have my children. Although I returned briefly to school teaching, during this time I took City and Guilds machine embroidery through to diploma level which led me to teach in adult education. I have taught now for over twenty years as a tutor at Missenden Abbey where I taught City and Guilds, as well as at a variety of weekend and summer school classes. I have also taught at numerous workshops throughout the UK as well as running weekly machine embroidery classes at a local adult education centre. I currently run a Stitched Textiles Masterclass that meet six times a year. As well as machine embroidery I have taught sketchbook classes, book making and printing on textiles. I have also been involved with numerous community projects working both in schools as well as with adults and children with learning difficulties.

Do I need experience of free machine embroidery

Absolutely not! This course is specifically designed for the beginner or those with little experience although the actual projects will appeal to anyone. You do not need to have taken the first course to do this one.

How much does the course cost?

The course will cost £35 which I hope you will agree represents excellent value for the amount of content offered.

Can I share the course content

I'm sure you will appreciate that putting together an online course takes a lot of time and effort to prepare, so I ask that you don't share the content. All the information is for the sole use of the individual subscriber. I am happy for you to share your results of the course on social media but I do ask that you tag/mention me. And if you wish to make the projects for sale at craft fairs etc all I ask is that you identify me as the designer. Thank you

will you be offering more courses

Definitely! This course is the second in a series of three designed to boost confidence in free machine embroidery skills. The next course will be delivered over the following couple of months. And there will be more next year.

What if I'm unhappy with my purchase?

I really hope you will love the course. Unfortunately I cannot offer refunds once you have signed up which is why I'm giving you as much information as possible before you decide to enrol. But if you are still really are unhappy then do get in touch.

I still have a question, how can I contact you?

I'd be happy to answer any questions you might have. Send me an email at
