Paint, Print, Collage and Stitch

Hello and welcome to my course, Paint, Print, Collage, Stitch. I am Gina Ferrari, an adult education tutor with over twenty years experience teaching machine embroidery, art and design.

This course came about through a series of experiments with painting and stitch. When we moved home a couple of years ago I was temporarily without a dedicated sewing space and most of my threads and fabrics were stashed away. So instead of sewing I returned to my love of drawing and painting and started to experiment with acrylic paint. One day I was tearing up some paintings that hadn't worked and rearranging them in my sketchbook when I started to wonder what would happen if I added stitch. Before I knew it I had created a series of collaged and stitched pictures and had the idea of a new course. This has been published as a step by step guide in edition 6 of WOWbook and I have also taught it in person over a two day summer school, where each student produced several stunning pictures - all totally original and worthy of framing and hanging on the wall.

You will be taken through a step by step process to create beautiful and unique papers. I will then show you how to select designs and create beautiful collaged pictures into which you will then stitch. If you have never stitched on paper before, prepare to be amazed! It is so easy and totally addictive. This is a course for any level of experience.

If you have any questions that I have not answered here then please do get in touch.

Enrolment is now open and this will give you access to all the lessons, the private facebook group and the list of requirements.

  • I would just like to say ‘ a big thank you, Gina ‘. I have enjoyed your course immensely and have learned so much. I would thoroughly recommend it. It is well constructed, each stage is clearly explained and accompanied by clear demonstration videos. The PDF sheets are also an added bonus. Lastly, your personal support has been wonderful. You have made yourself available to us throughout and nothing has been too much trouble. Well done and many thanks.

  • I enjoyed the whole course, it took me smoothly through the whole creative process, from design to completion, wonderful. Gina responded to any question swiftly and comprehensively. Seeing everyone’s work and comments was very helpful as well

    — Vanda
  • I really enjoyed doing this online. I have felt a bit intimidated on some courses in the past, in the flesh, as everyone seems so much more skilled than me. Being able to go at my own pace was really helpful. I have learnt so much and have been inspired to continue. Although there are many parts of my sample that did not work, I now feel confident to have another go. Thank you. You haven't heard the last of me!

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do I have access to the course?

Once you've enrolled and paid, you'll have access to the course material until 30th April 2022

What materials will I need?

You will need good quality paper, acrylic paints, brushes and other tools for applying paint, acrylic gel medium, acrylic inks (optional) and some collage papers such as old book/magazine pages, paper bags maps etc. You will also need a sewing machine in which you can lower or cover the feed dogs and an embroidery foot. I give a comprehensive list of everything you need and where you can get them.

How much time will the course take?

The course content will be available to you as soon as you enrol and you can spend as much time as you wish exploring the content. I would estimate a minimum of 10-12 hours will be required to work through the course content but it is open ended. As with anything the more hours you can devote and time you can put in, the more you will get out of it.

Do I need experience of free machine embroidery?

Absolutely not! The machine embroidery is very straightforward. For the complete beginner in machine embroidery I will include a brief introduction.

Can I share the course content?

I'm sure you will appreciate that putting together an online course takes a lot of time and effort to prepare, so I ask that you don't share the content. All the information is for the sole use of the individual subscriber. I am happy for you to share your results of the course on social media but I do ask that you tag/mention me. Thank you

What are your qualifications?

I originally trained as a secondary school teacher and taught Maths and Art in a North London school before taking a career break to have my children. Although I returned briefly to school teaching, during this time I took City and Guilds machine embroidery through to diploma level which led me to teach in adult education. I have taught now for over twenty years as a tutor at Missenden Abbey where I taught City and Guilds, as well as at a variety of weekend and summer school classes. I have also taught at numerous workshops throughout the UK as well as running weekly machine embroidery classes at a local adult education centre. As well as machine embroidery I have taught sketchbook classes, book making and printing on textiles. I have also been involved with numerous community projects working both in schools as well as with adults and children with learning difficulties.

Can I get a refund if I am unhappy with the course?

I really hope you will love the course and unfortunately I cannot offer refunds once you have signed up which is why I'm giving you as much information as possible before you decide to enrol. But if you are still really are unhappy then do get in touch.
