Ho’oponopono is an ancient Hawaiian practice of healing through forgiveness. Ho’o means ‘to make‘ and pono ‘right‘ – the double use of pono means with both yourself and others. The ancient Hawaiians understood that holding onto negative emotions like anger and resentment only hurts the person who can’t forgive. Ho'oponopono is not about right or wrong but a symbolic way to cut the connection to the event or person causing us pain.
Benefits of a regular Ho'oponopono practice include:
- Better relationships
- Lower stress levels
- Letting go of emotional baggage
- Reframing difficult situations
- Better coping skills with heavy emotions
- More control of your thoughts and actions
- Less emotional reactivity
- Recognizing your strength
Long term resentments and perceived ‘wrongs’ can damage our relationships with ourselves and others. We can all think of a painful memory we feel hurt or angry about that we bring up and go over from time to time. For some, this goes much deeper with traumatic levels of hurt or abuse.
This process helps to clear the subconscious mind's programming of emotional reactivity by neutralizing these memories. What happened is not our fault, but we are responsible for our emotions and how we respond to life's problems and disappointments.
Although this ritual may need to be done repeatedly it can still help the healing process, however big the trauma. It is not about apologizing to the person who hurt us (although this may be appropriate in some cases), we can also take it as an apology to our Higher Self, ourselves, and our inner child for being attached to patterns of blame or shame or anger that disturb our peace.
By letting go of these emotions that only cause us pain we can truly heal and be happy.
- Survivors of trauma or abuse
- Long-term relationships
- Challenging family dynamics
- When feeling stuck in the past
- When you're ready to let go but don't know how
