Hello and welcome to my course, Machine Textured Landscapes. I am Gina Ferrari, an adult education tutor with over twenty years experience teaching machine embroidery.
In this course you will create your own design from an original source and interpret your design into a beautiful machine embroidered landscape, using a variety of different techniques, fabrics and threads. You will be given a comprehensive list of materials together with suppliers.
The course is organised into four main sections as well as a welcome session and a wrap session at the end, each consisting of several short videos. The first section is about creating your design; the second will take you through all the stitch techniques you need; the third section puts everything together to create your picture; and the final section is about finishing techniques and presentation.
Although this is a course I usually teach over an intense two-three days you will be able to take this at your own pace, watching the videos and doing the exercises in a way that suits you.
It is not necessary to have previous experience of machine embroidery, yet the course still has plenty to offer the experienced embroiderer.
If you have any questions that I have not answered here then please do get in touch.
Enrolment is now open and this will give you access to the introduction, the private facebook group and the list of requirements so you can gather your materials for the start of the course. The course content will be available from 9 am (British Summer Time) on Saturday 1st August.

Your classes are relaxed and friendly and I learned so much. I remember making a wonderful seascape in this workshop and learned so many new ways of adding texture to the scene. I ended up with a really special picture that became a gift for a special friend. Anyone who takes this class is sure to have fun and to produce something special with a supportive teacher— Julie M
This course was my first foray into machine embroidery. I was a complete novice and it was a revelation to learn how much I could do by altering tensions and dropping the feed dog. Over the course of a weekend I stitched and manipulated fabrics and threads in ways I had never dreamed of. I was so pleased with what I achieved I still have my first landscape framed on the wall at home— Kim E

Frequently Asked Questions
How long do I have access to the course?
Once you've enrolled and paid, you'll have access to the course material for six months allowing you to work at your own pace through the lessons.
What materials will I need?
Number one is a sewing machine where you can lower or cover the feed dogs plus an embroidery foot. You will need some simple design equipment such as coloured papers (old magazines will do), scissors and glue. And some fabrics and threads. There are one or two specialist fabrics but I give a comprehensive list of everything you need and where you can get them.
How much time will the course take?
When I teach this class in person it is usually an intense two/three day workshop but the beauty of taking it online means you can take as long as you wish. You can do it all in a weekend or spread it out over several weeks.
Do I need experience of free machine embroidery?
Absolutely not! This is a course for beginners as well as those with some experience and I will talk you through each stage step by step. The free video above is also a good introduction to the basics. I will also be available to answer your questions
Can I share the course content?
I'm sure you will appreciate that putting together an online course takes a lot of time and effort to prepare, so I ask that you don't share the content. All the information is for the sole use of the individual subscriber. I am happy for you to share your results of the course on social media but I do ask that you tag/mention me. Thank you
Will you be offering more courses?
Yes, that is my plan and I hope to add several courses of different lengths at different price ranges. Hopefully something for everyone in a variety of art and craft subjects... not only machine embroidery!
What are your qualifications?
I originally trained as a secondary school teacher and taught Maths and Art in a North London school before taking a career break to have my children. Although I returned briefly to school teaching, during this time I took City and Guilds machine embroidery through to diploma level which led me to teach in adult education. I have taught now for over twenty years as a tutor at Missenden Abbey where I taught City and Guilds, as well as at a variety of weekend and summer school classes. I have also taught at numerous workshops throughout the UK as well as running weekly machine embroidery classes at a local adult education centre. I currently run a Stitched Textiles Masterclass that meet six times a year. As well as machine embroidery I have taught sketchbook classes, book making and printing on textiles. I have also been involved with numerous community projects working both in schools as well as with adults and children with learning difficulties.
