Hi, I'm Heather Telford, a proud dual citizen, Australian born, now living in Canada. All my life I have enjoyed creating, whether it's with paper, inks and paint or fabric, threads and dyes, I have always loved art and craft. Making card sized art has become a passion of mine, particularly using stamps and watercolour techniques.
Originally a primary school teacher, I now teach art and card making classes locally. It has been a long time goal of mine to create online classes too. Sharing my passion and process brings me joy so I am excited to offer an online card making course. I have teamed up with my videographer son, Ben, to create 'Colour Clues'!
I am delighted to invite you to my Colour Clues class. Experimenting with colour is a great starting point for creating interesting backgrounds and beautiful stamped and coloured foreground images. Choosing which colours play well together doesn't have to be a guessing game once you know a bit about primary and secondary colours.
One of the bonuses of blogging at cards.heathertelford.com for 13 years has been connecting with creative people all around the world. As a local artist and teacher I've also developed friendships at classes, crops and markets. Near or far this class is for all of you. You have inspired and encouraged me. I hope this class does the same for you.
So sorry to see this class end. Loved all the lessons and examples. I hope to incorporate many of these ideas into future cards! Thanks so much Heather. You and your son did a fabulous job putting together such a professional looking course. Hope to see more in the future!— Gail, Ottawa, Canada
I always love Heather Telford's watercolor cards. They are just gorgeous. And they are the reason I signed up for her online class Colour Clues.— Godelieve, Belgium
What is in the class?
Colour Clues is divided into three lessons. In the first lesson we experiment with the primary colours. Sometimes it is helpful in design situations to limit the materials and choices. Blending and mixing with just red, yellow and blue gives us the chance to see the secondary colours emerge.
In the second lesson we limit ourselves to one colour at a time but not a primary; this time we are choosing a secondary colour so we can dilute it and see its component hues emerge.
In the third and final lesson we look at two different colour combinations. There are of course many ways to combine colours but in 'Boosters & Besties' we work first with colours that are harmonious due to being side by side on the colour wheel and secondly those that contrast, the ones that are opposite each other on the colour wheel.
All the lessons include an introductory video as well as detailed instructional videos for every card project. You can complete the class at your own pace as you progress from lesson to lesson through all ten projects. I will be available to answer questions via email or in the comments section every step of the way.
What will we be making?
Just in case you are thinking this is simply a colour theory class let me assure you it is definitely a card making class. As we learn about colours we will be creating ten different cards using a range of techniques, materials, stamps and dies. I will be working with inks and watercolour paints, outline stamps and solid stamps, loose watercolour style and precise colouring.
What will I need?
You will need some stamps, dies and inks for this course but you don't need the exact supplies I use. I know you want to get more use out of the products you own. I will be using basic watercolour techniques (beginners welcome) and a range of stamps and dies to make the cards. Probably the most important item you will need is watercolour paper. I use Fabriano Artistico 140lb 100% cotton hot pressed paper and I recommend using the same weight and cotton percentage even if you go for another brand. I will talk about my choice of supplies in detail before we dive into the lessons.
To give you an idea of the type of stamps I use in the class I've provided a link to the list of stamps featured. Remember you don't need exactly the same ones! STAMP LIST
