Hello and welcome to my course, Matisse - From Inspiration to Stitch. I am Gina Ferrari, an adult education tutor with over twenty years experience teaching machine embroidery, art and design.
I have designed this course for those with some experience of textile art who wish to explore the creative process. It is a Masterclass in Stitched Textiles based on actual classes that I have taught and mentored in person. It is one of a series of short courses I am planning to launch, (based on a longer course launched in January 2021) each taking a different artist as inspiration. Looking at a variety of different techniques both in design and stitch, as well as exploring a variety of materials, students will be given ideas on how to take these explorations further into finished pieces but the focus will be on encouraging individual exploration with full support and guidance.
You will be encouraged to create your own designs from a variety of original source materials, using different techniques, fabrics and threads. You will be given a comprehensive list of materials together with suppliers, with alternatives where appropriate.
There is also an introductory session which will be common to all of the courses in the series, allowing students to pick and choose the courses that appeal to them. You can choose to take one course or all the courses as they are released, or pick and choose the ones that interest you. Each short course will consist of of several short videos, that will introduce the source of inspiration, look at different ways of exploring the design ideas through sketchbooks, and looking at different techniques and ways in which the designs might be interpreted in stitch. As well as videos there will be some notes to download and links to other resources.
This is not a course that will teach you how to make a finished item, although there will be ideas and suggestion as to how you might take your ideas and interpretations into finished projects, using both hand and machine embroidery.
If you have any questions that I have not answered here then please do get in touch.
Enrolment is now open and this will give you access to all the lessons, the private facebook group and the list of requirements so you can gather your materials.

I would just like to say ‘ a big thank you, Gina ‘. I have enjoyed your course immensely and have learned so much. I would thoroughly recommend it. It is well constructed, each stage is clearly explained and accompanied by clear demonstration videos. The PDF sheets are also an added bonus. Lastly, your personal support has been wonderful. I enjoyed the whole course, it took me smoothly through the whole creative process, from design to completion, wonderful. Gina responded to any question swiftly and comprehensively. Seeing everyone’s work and comments was very helpful as well— Vanda
I really enjoyed doing this online. I have felt a bit intimidated on some courses in the past, in the flesh, as everyone seems so much more skilled than me. Being able to go at my own pace was really helpful. I have learnt so much and have been inspired to continue. Although there are many parts of my sample that did not work, I now feel confident to have another go. Thank you. You haven't heard the last of me!— Lin
Frequently Asked Questions
How long do I have access to the course?
Once you've enrolled and paid, you'll have access to the course material for six months allowing you to work at your own pace through the lessons.
What materials will I need?
You will need some simple design equipment such as coloured papers (old magazines will do), scissors and glue. And some fabrics and threads and sewing equipment. If you want to include machine embroidery in your work you will obviously need a sewing machine where you can lower the feed dogs. There are one or two specialist fabrics but I give a comprehensive list of everything you need and where you can get them.
How much time will the course take?
The course content will be available to you as soon as you enrol and you can spend as much time as you wish exploring the content. I would estimate a minimum of 10-12 hours will be required to work through the course content but it is open ended. As with anything the more hours you can devote and time you can put in, the more you will get out of it.
Do I need experience of free machine embroidery?
Absolutely not! You can complete the entire course using just hand stitch or a combination of techniques. For the complete beginner in machine embroidery I will include a brief introduction.
Can I share the course content?
I'm sure you will appreciate that putting together an online course takes a lot of time and effort to prepare, so I ask that you don't share the content. All the information is for the sole use of the individual subscriber. I am happy for you to share your results of the course on social media but I do ask that you tag/mention me. Thank you
Will you be offering more courses?
Yes, it is my plan to continue to develop courses of different lengths, in different subjects at different price ranges. Hopefully something for everyone in a variety of art and craft subjects... not only machine embroidery! To keep up to date be sure to sign up to my newsletter via the link above.
What are your qualifications?
I originally trained as a secondary school teacher and taught Maths and Art in a North London school before taking a career break to have my children. Although I returned briefly to school teaching, during this time I took City and Guilds machine embroidery through to diploma level which led me to teach in adult education. I have taught now for over twenty years as a tutor at Missenden Abbey where I taught City and Guilds, as well as at a variety of weekend and summer school classes. I have also taught at numerous workshops throughout the UK as well as running weekly machine embroidery classes at a local adult education centre. As well as machine embroidery I have taught sketchbook classes, book making and printing on textiles. I have also been involved with numerous community projects working both in schools as well as with adults and children with learning difficulties.
Can I get a refund if I am unhappy with the course?
I really hope you will love the course and unfortunately I cannot offer refunds once you have signed up which is why I'm giving you as much information as possible before you decide to enrol. But if you are still really are unhappy then do get in touch.
How much does the course cost?
The full cost of each short course is £45
I still have a question, how can I contact you?
