Beyond the Belly: Prenatal Massage that Doesn't Suck

Prenatal Massage No to Prenatal Massage Pro

I know you.

Massage isn’t just a job, it's your act of service.

When it comes to prenatal massage
You aren’t bumbling
Inept.

An amateur.
Bad at your job.

….or even a liability.

You’re just undereducated—
with a skill set to match.

When your pregnant client leaves a session relaxed and happy ,

Optimistic about their pregnancy,

Or pain free,

one things for sure:

The secret to making a real difference for a prenatal client,

Is a good teacher teaching you a real skillset.

Sure, you’ve managed to open up a practice

You’ve got clients on your books.

And maybe even weeks where you are busting at the seams schedule wise.

But there’s just one little problem:

Your prenatal massage doesn’t match the rest of your massage skills.
Skills you’ve worked (incredibly) hard to master.

Skills that don’t just support your work.

But ARE your best work.
And while a weak prenatal game holds no shame,

It’s not a match with for what you expect from yourself.

Not the therapist who gives their all.

Introducing Beyond the Belly: Prenatal Massage that Doesn’t Suck:

An online course that straight up teaches massage therapists how to apply their “A" game massage skills to a prenatal session that is so good it resets the local standard for pregnancy massage. Teaches excellent massage therapists the foundation for excellent prenatal work.

Because while your prenatal game may not be awful, its not even close to what it could be.

This is about your personal and professional pride.

Pride in a session that makes a difference in the life (lives?) of your client. Pride in a session your pregnant client tells their world about. Pride that YOU delivered your best work in an area that many are afraid to approach.

You CAN do that, if you choose.

And that's where I come in.

My name is Rowan, and I’ve been a prenatal massage therapist since 1994, and teaching prenatal massage since 2004. I know that prenatal massage can be intimidating—I can teach you. I know that learning the new skills is daunting -- I can teach you. I know that applying the skills you do have on a pregnant body can be scary AF —I can teach you.  I know you want your prenatal skills to be as strong as your other work — I can teach you.

In sum, I teach awesome massage therapists to be even more awesome. I help massage therapists like you:

  • Have your stellar prenatal reputation precede you
  • Feel confident that your massage soothed pregnancy aches and pains
  • See the results of your hard work in your paycheck
  • Feel proud of filling your knowledge gap
  • Market your prenatal massage with confidence
  • Get taken seriously by other birth professionals
  • And most importantly, feel the sheer peace and self satisfaction when you finally sit down at the end of the day that your bodywork changed lives, for the better.

  • She's is knowledgable, relatable and entertaining. Thanks for sharing your magic Rowan.

    — Erin Young

  • Demystifying pregnancy complications, especially what’s considered safe for low risk prenatal massage. You will 100 percent know who is in your scope of practice.
  • Anatomy of the pelvis is laid out, so you learn why the prone position in prenatal is a mostly terrible idea.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do I have access to the course?

Forever! Once you've enrolled and paid, you'll have access to the course material for as long as you need. So devour it all in one weekend or take things slow. It's your choice!

What if this course sucks?

It doesn't.

How do I know this information is accurate and won't hurt the baby? What are the authors credentials, sources and references?

Great QUESTION!!!!! So here is the deal, I've been a prenatal massage therapist starting around 1994 when I was first licensed. This was waaaay back in the day, when prenatal massage was actually contraindicated. Since on some level I've always been a student midwife, I did some learning and self teaching and reading and actually bought books and went to the library (pre internet!) and interviewed midwives and OBs and came up with a massage plan. In 2003/4 I took classes with Carole Osbourne Sheets and upped my game considerably. After that I co-wrote curriculum for Houston Community College with Khaliah Richards for prenatal massage, and we taught that together for a few years. I started teaching low risk prenatal massage again starting in 2015 and realized that my previous class needed a serious overhaul. I started my midwifery apprenticeship in Jan 2016 which has really confirmed much of my teaching and positioning style, and is probably why the anatomy and contraindications are so thorough in this course (and maybe a little bit overboard.) So in summary, I've always been an anatomy nerd and birth junkie, and I'm putting 25 years experience of prenatal massage, 20 years of doula`~ing and my midwifery knowledge into a concise online course, And a big shout out to Robin Blackwell for organizing my thoughts so I could get this to you.

Do these credits count toward Texas CEU if they are online? TX seems to really like hands on credits.

Yes, this is primarily a screening for high risk/low risk class (get ready to know your contraindcations!), with a heavy dose of how to use the skills you already have while using proper positioning to engage the parasympathetic nervous system.

What's the value of an online experience vs. A face to face experience?

Wellll, some classes can be taught online, and some are totally necessary in person hands on. In this instance, online is the jam because the information is easily transferred, and doesn't really require theinvestment of travel, time, and the hotel room. Instead you get the rockin' -est thing: getting your ceu credits while wearing your most comfy jammies and slugging down java.

How can these techniques be applied beyond prenatal?

Side lying and engaging the parasymathetic nervous system is great for larger folks, elderly, folks recovering from injuries and anyone who has an injury on the lateral aspect of the body, ex a weekend warrior hip injury. See that, this is way bigger than prenatal!

What is the Labor Whispering Academy?

The Labor Whisering Academy is a groovy group of peeps who are deadicated to supporting pregnant people having the birth experience they want, specifically by coaxing folks into labor who may be experience a hold up of some sort. Often Labor Whispering sessions are done pre emptively, and are espescially well suited for outcall massage sessions when a client is in the teerm window 37-42 weeks.

This class is the first of the series of the Labor Whsipering Academy. Fel free to message me if you see yourself on this journey and want more 411.

But I'm not really an online course finisher type of gal (or dude.)

Listen up, when you see that you have a prenatal massage client on your schedule tomorrow, you know what you are gonna be doing the night before? This course. And I'm gonna save your bacon.

This course is out of my budget.

I get that. And in 3-4 sessions (or two if you are baller) will put it back in your pocket. And really this course is for people who really want to EXCELL in prenatal, they love this work, and want to offer the best they can. Alternately, its for someone who sees all the dollars that aren't going into their own pockets every time they turn away a client or do subpar work. And the client doesn't book their next appointment before leaving. Booooooooo.

I'm not really a massage therapist, I just want to massage on my partner effectively.

FANTASTIC!!!! As long as you aren't charging money for services while unlicensed then this is nine million percent ok and AWESOME!

What if the client is wrong about being low-risk? What does low-risk mean?

After this class you will totally be able to distiguish between a straight forward low risk pregnancy, and a high risk pregnancy that is not within the scope of practice for this class. And the good news is I am writing a high risk class RIGHT NOW for ya.

Why would prenatal massage suck?

Because massage therapists are typically undertrained, afraid, or don't do it enough to stay proficient. That's why this course is an on demand refresher!

I still have a question, how can I contact you?

I'd be happy to answer any questions you might have. Send me an email at incantation@mac.com.

What would if feel like to get reviews like this?

  • "I feel like a new person! At 23 weeks pregnant I was hurting from neck to hips and I now feel SO much better. It was a relaxing and informative experience that has helped me walk so much better than before the massage and provided me with some birth imformation I hadn't considered before. I hope to go back as soon as time will allow.”

  • Rowan's sidelying technique has proved to be an invaluable technique in my practice. My clients with scoliosis, fibromyalgia and arthritis who normally find standard massage positions barely tolerable have stated their massage experience has been greatly enhanced by being cushioned through out their session.

    — Michael Vachmiel
  • I am currently a Doula, Medic, and student in a massage school. I suggest Rowan's Low Risk Prenatal Massage Class to massage students, LMTs, and anyone wanting to learn prenatal massage. I find this class to be ideal for doulas and birthworkers looking for ways to comfortably position their clients for physical and emotional support services, including verbal first aid in labor. Rowan's teaching style is inviting and inclusive, warmly guuiding the student with a voice of confidence and decades of experience. Her prowess and devoted clientelle prove that the methods taught in this class are exactly what a pregnant body needs!

Be like Will

"The only thing that I see that is distinctly different about me is I'm not afraid to die on a treadmill. I will not be out-worked, period. You might have more talent than me, you might be smarter than me, you might be sexier than me, you might be all of those things you got it on me in nine categories. But if we get on the treadmill together, there's two things: You're getting off first, or I'm going to die. It's really that simple, right?
You're not going to out-work me. It's such a simple, basic concept. The guy who is willing to hustle the most is going to be the guy that just gets that loose ball. The majority of people who aren't getting the places they want or aren't achieving the things that they want in this business is strictly based on hustle. It's strictly based on being out-worked; it's strictly based on missing crucial opportunities. I say all the time if you stay ready, you ain't gotta get ready.
